What is a sizzle reel?

A sizzle reel is a short, fast-paced highlights video - usually 60 to 90 seconds - that showcases the best of a brand, agency, product or person's work in a single package. It is designed to make an impression quickly, whether you are pitching a client, selling a show, promoting an event or introducing your company.

You will also hear it called a showreel, demo reel, highlight reel, promo video or teaser. Whether you are a brand looking to showcase your best work or a director building your video production portfolio, the job is the same: your ultimate highlights package. Over the years we have produced loads of reels for our clients and ourselves. You can see our latest one below.

Sizzle reel, showreel or demo reel - what's the difference?

Very little, in practice. The terms are used interchangeably and what matters is the job the video does, not the label.

Term Usually means Typical use
Sizzle reel A punchy highlights edit, often for pitching Agencies, brands, TV pitches, events
Showreel The same thing - more common in the UK Production companies, directors
Demo reel One person's work rather than a company's Editors, cinematographers, actors
Highlight reel A recap of something that happened Events, conferences, campaigns

How long should a sizzle reel be?

60 to 90 seconds for most purposes. Two minutes is the outer limit before attention drops away sharply. A few exceptions worth knowing:

  • Agency or company reel: 60-90 seconds. Front-load your strongest work, because most viewers will not reach the end.
  • Event highlight reel: 60-120 seconds, with a 20-30 second cutdown for social.
  • TV or format pitch: 2-4 minutes, because you are selling a concept rather than proving craft.
  • Individual demo reel: 60 seconds or less. Ruthless curation beats range.

The most common mistake is length. One weak shot drags down everything around it, so if you are hesitating over a clip, cut it.

What does a sizzle reel cost?

Most professionally produced sizzle reels cost between £5,000 and £10,000. Where you land in that range comes down to one thing more than any other: whether the footage already exists.

  • Editing existing footage sits at the lower end. The work is curation, story, grade and sound design rather than production. If you have a library of finished projects, this is where most brand and agency reels land.
  • Shooting new material pushes towards the upper end and beyond, because crew, location and talent costs come with it.
  • Licensing and music are the costs people forget. A commercial music licence for a reel you will use in pitches and on your website is a separate line, and using an unlicensed track on a public-facing reel is a real risk rather than a theoretical one.

The useful question to ask a production company is how much of the cost is edit versus shoot, because that is the part you can actually control.

What makes a sizzle reel work?

Three things separate a reel that wins work from one that just plays.

  • It shows the work you want next, not just the work you have done. If you want more brand films, lead with brand films, even if animation pays the bills today.
  • It has a shape. The best reels build. A flat sequence of nice shots is a montage; a reel takes you somewhere.
  • Someone made hard cuts. Every reel that feels tight is the result of removing something the maker liked.

We've pulled together a short guide for scripting and editing an outstanding showreel:

1. Define Your Objective:

  • Start by clarifying the purpose of your showreel. Is it to showcase your agency's capabilities, highlight specific projects, or demonstrate your creative skills? Knowing your objective is key.

2. Select Your Best Work:

  • Curate a selection of your most impressive projects that align with your objective. Choose a variety of content to showcase your versatility and expertise. Remember, its as much about showing the type of work you want to win too.

3. Create a Compelling Script:

  • Begin with a strong opening that grabs viewers' attention. This could be a memorable quote, a striking visual, or a brief introduction.
  • Keep the script concise and focused. Highlight key achievements, skills, and unique selling points.
  • Don't overdo it. The viewer may only remember 3 messages so focus on the most important ones.
  • What else can you include? Client testimonials or endorsements can build trust.
  • Conclude with a powerful call to action, urging viewers to contact your agency. It might be useful to script the CTA first.

4. Organise Your Content:

  • Collect everything and anything. A great editor, like the ones at BearJam, will decide what to use and what to leave out. why not start a folder and collate material over the year!?

5. Pay Attention to Timing:

  • Keep the video duration relatively short, ideally between 1 to 2 minutes. Capture your audience's attention quickly and maintain their interest.

6. Music and Sound Design:

  • Select a soundtrack that complements the mood and tone of your showreel. Ensure the audio quality is top-notch.
  • Use sound effects to enhance the impact of specific visuals or moments.

7. Visual Consistency:

  • Maintain a consistent visual style and colour palette throughout the showreel. This creates a cohesive and professional look.
  • Pay attention to colour correction and ensure all footage looks its best.

8. Showcase Creativity:

  • Incorporate unique and creative elements that reflect your agency's style and innovation.
  • Consider using motion graphics, animations, or other visual effects to make your showreel stand out and help with the storytelling.

9. Test and Refine:

  • Preview the showreel with a small focus group to gather feedback. Make necessary adjustments based on their input.
  • Ensure that the pacing, storytelling, and messaging are effective.

10. Branding and Contact Information:

  • Include your agency's logo, website, and contact information prominently at the end of the video.
  • Make it easy for viewers to reach out to you after watching.

Bonus Tip - Stay Updated:

  • Keep your showreel current by regularly updating it with your latest and most impressive work. Don't be precious about cutting out old, dated or weaker content.

By following these steps, you can script and edit a brilliant showreel. Or you could just get BearJam to do it!!

Frequently asked

What is a sizzle reel?
A short highlights video, usually 60 to 90 seconds, that showcases the best of a brand, agency or individual's work in one package. It is built to make a fast, strong impression.

How long should a sizzle reel be?
60 to 90 seconds for most purposes. Two minutes is the practical maximum. TV and format pitches can run to four minutes because they are selling a concept rather than proving craft.

How much does a sizzle reel cost?
Most professionally produced sizzle reels cost between £5,000 and £10,000. Editing an existing footage library sits at the lower end; shooting new material pushes towards the upper end. Music licensing is a separate cost people often overlook.

What is the difference between a sizzle reel and a showreel?
Very little. "Showreel" is more common in the UK and "sizzle reel" in the US. Both describe a curated highlights edit. "Demo reel" usually refers to an individual's work rather than a company's.

Can I make a sizzle reel from unfinished work?
Yes. Works in progress, unreleased projects and personal work are all fair game, as long as you have the rights to show them.

What should I avoid?
Length, mostly. Also burying your best work, using unlicensed music, and including clips that show what you can do rather than what you want to do next.
