Do you watch or listen to podcasts?
It’s a question that might’ve sounded strange a few years ago. Podcasts were once synonymous with audio-only experiences—perfect for commutes, chores, or long walks (haven't we all put a podcast on when cleaning at home). But things have changed. And if you're anything like me, you probably find yourself not just listening to podcasts anymore - but watching them too.
In a recent article, it was pointed out that the way we consume podcast content is undergoing a major shift. And it’s true. These days, when I tune in to a podcast, I keep the audio on, sure—but I almost always want the video on as well. There’s something more personal, more engaging, about seeing the podcasters. Their reactions, expressions, body language—all of it brings a new level of connection to the conversation (watching snippets on TikTok has become my guilty pleasure)
And I’m not alone (if you're still reading then i would like to think not).
Podcasts Are Becoming Visual
A growing number of people are choosing to watch their favorite podcasts, despite the endless sea of shows available on streaming platforms. What’s behind this shift? It’s about presence and personality.
Seeing the faces behind the voices creates a more intimate, authentic feel. The experience becomes less like eavesdropping on a conversation and more like joining in.
YouTube Is Leading the Charge
In February, YouTube revealed that it had over 1 billion active podcast viewers, who collectively watched more than 400 million hours of podcast content per month in their living rooms. Yes—living rooms.
This isn’t passive listening while folding laundry. People are sitting down and watching podcasts like they would a late-night show or a Netflix docuseries. In fact, the lines between podcasts, talk shows, and online video content are blurring fast.
35% Growth- And Climbing
Watching podcasts has grown by 35%, and it’s easy to see why. As media habits evolve, so do creators. More podcasters are embracing multimedia storytelling—producing full video versions of their episodes and enhancing them with visuals, graphics, and behind-the-scenes content. Many also use platforms like TikTok and Instagram to share short, impactful clips, further boosting their reach and building stronger community connections.
Audio Isn't Dead—But It's Changing
Of course, audio-only podcasts still have their place. They’re convenient, flexible, and accessible. But for many of us, they’re no longer the only way we connect with podcasts. The future of podcasting is hybrid—audio and video, passive listening and active watching.
So, what about you?
Are you still an audio-only listener, or have you joined the growing crowd watching podcasts like your favorite TV show? One of my favourite things about podcasts is how varied they are — there’s truly something out there for everyone
