What Is an Event Highlight Video (And How to Get More From Yours)

  • An event highlight video is a short, high-energy edit that captures the atmosphere, key moments, and best soundbites from a live event. Think of it as the trailer for something that's already happened. Done well, it makes people who were there feel proud they attended and people who weren't feel like they missed out.

  • Most highlight reels run between 60 seconds and 3 minutes. The sweet spot depends on where you're publishing. A 60-second cut works best for LinkedIn and Instagram. A 2-3 minute version suits YouTube and your website. Anything over 3 minutes needs a strong editorial reason to justify the length.

Why most highlight videos underperform

  • The typical approach is to send a videographer to the event, film whatever happens, then cut together a montage set to upbeat music. The result looks fine. It also looks exactly like every other event video on the internet.

  • The problem isn't the filming. It's the planning. If you don't decide what content you need before the event, you'll end up with footage that's pretty but purposeless.

How to get more from your event video

  • The brands that get real value from event filming treat it as a content capture exercise, not just documentation.

  • Before the event, identify the content formats you need: a highlight reel, speaker soundbites, attendee interviews, behind-the-scenes clips, branded social assets. Then plan the crew and schedule around those deliverables. On the day, split the team between coverage (roaming footage, atmosphere, cutaways) and directed content (interviews, vox pops, speaker captures).

  • When we filmed Osprey's Paisley Pear launch event, we split the crew into two ground units and a drone team, each assigned to different content objectives. The result was a full suite of evergreen videos from a single day.

  • For Philadelphia  influencer event with Davina McCall, we had two DOPs covering the day and delivered the first three social edits within 72 hours. Speed matters when your event is generating social buzz.

Multi-format delivery is where the real value lives

  • A single event shoot should generate far more than one highlight reel. Plan for: a 60-second sizzle reel for social, a 2-3 minute highlight cut for YouTube and your website, 5-10 individual speaker or interview clips, vertical crops for Reels, Shorts, and TikTok, subtitled versions for LinkedIn (where most viewers watch without sound), and branded quote graphics pulled from key soundbites.

  • Over a single conference or launch event, that's 15-20+ assets from one day of filming.

When to bring in a production company

  • If your event is client-facing, press-worthy, or a significant brand moment, the production quality matters. A shaky iPhone clip might capture the energy, but it won't represent your brand the way a professionally filmed event video will.

  • A production company brings multi-camera coverage, professional audio, experienced direction, and a post-production pipeline that delivers every format you need, fast.If you've got an event coming up and want to plan the content capture properly, talk to our team.
