Meet the Directors: Luca Rossetti

This week we interviewed visual effects director Luca Rossetti to find out a bit more about what makes him tick.

1. What made you pursue filmmaking?

I think I have started falling in love with the film industry when I was kid, like many others watching masterpieces such as Star Wars or Indiana Jones…I was more attracted by the Special/Optical FX and later the VFX and the fantasy worlds behind rather than the pure storytelling, but action and fantasy were a very good mix to me.

2. What roadblocks did you face when you were starting out and what do you face today (if any)?

I have been lucky enough to grow up in the visual effects industry in films, quite rapidly, putting my signature on big blockbusters, as VFX Artist and later Supervisor/Art Director…the main issue probably has been the transition from a label I had into a the new role as a film director, but to be honest I have been very advantageous due my very high level background, and this is something that not a lot of directors can claim.

3. What is your greatest film achievement to date?

As Film Director, it’s probably not there yet, I am planning to shoot a feature this year.

4. Can you tell us about the greatest personal moment in your career so far?

Meeting and working with the most relevant film directors and actors worldwide. Sharing an experience is the most effective way to improve yourself.

5. Do you have any advice for young filmmakers out there ?

Filmmaking is a lifestyle, believe that you can make it…the rest will come, however, becoming a film director is really a personal path, you won’t find the same stories quite often…

6. Do you think it is essential to go to a film institute in order to become a successful filmmaker?

I don’t think so, however, in some ways you must study the rules and workflows.

7. Which film or piece of content has inspired you the most?

Blade Runner (the old one)

8. Which director(s) do you look up to and why?

Obviously, Ridley Scott is in my top position, a strong sense of storytelling and explorations in contents, a super picky photography, a stylish director indeed.

9. What is your dream film job/brief and why? Tell us who/which brand you would you love to work with.

I don’t have a particular one, I strongly believe any brand deserves the same quality, it’s more about what you can bring to the story/picture/idea as vision and style, rather than follow some usual treatment. If we talk about feature then, I have my own projects which deserve attention and I am keen to bring to life

10. What’s in-store for 2019?

So far I have been just shortlisted for a new TVC, but as I said, I am starting now the pre production for my first feature film debut this year.
